چکیده

Executive Summary The stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) is remarkably consistent over a host of environments in the Galactic neighborhood. The physical processes responsible for producing a seemingly invariant IMF have long been the subject of theoretical investigation. Recently, a potential link has been made between the mass distribution of clumps in nearby molecular clouds and the stellar IMF. To make a definitive determination if the stellar IMF is imprinted in the cloud structure, future observations need to show 1) that the mass function of clumps in molecular clouds is similar to the stellar/substellar IMF down to ∼0.01 M ⊙ , and 2) that the clump mass function is invariant to environment as is the stellar IMF. Such surveys can be conducted with the next generation of large format bolometer cameras and hetero-dyne arrays on 25-100 m class single aperture telescopes (CCAT, GBT, LMT) and with high resolution interferometric observations (ALMA, CARMA, EVLA, SMA) of targeted regions.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Formation of Stellar Clusters and the Importance of Thermodynamics for Fragmentation

We discuss results from numerical simulations of star cluster formation in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM). The thermodynamic behavior of the star-forming gas plays a crucial role in fragmentation and determines the stellar mass function as well as the dynamic properties of the nascent stellar cluster. This holds for star formation in molecular clouds in the solar neighborhood as well a...

Star Formation in Clusters : Subclustering , Cloud Fragmentation and the Origin of the Stellar IMF Leonardo

We review recent high spatial resolution millimeter continuum and spectral line observations of (proto-)cluster regions. These observations reveal that the mass distribution of prestellar cores is consistent with the initial mass function for field stars suggesting that the IMF is connected to the molecular clouds structure or the cloud fragmentation processes, rather than the details of the st...
